About & History

St. John the Baptist Church was established in 1819 and originally was part of the Diocese of Albany NY. We are the oldest Roman Catholic Church in Onondaga County and the second oldest in the Diocese of Syracuse. The original church was located on North Salina Street and was a small wood frame building. The original church was used until after the Civil War when the current church was constructed. The school moved to Park Street from its home on North Salina Street in the present Pastimes Athletic Building in 1924, and a high school was added in 1934. The final graduating high school class was in 1977 and in 2001 for the grammar school.

The present church congregation is the merged parishes of St. John the Baptist and Holy Trinity churches at the site of St. John the Baptist which occurred in 2009. The merged congregation is now known as St. John the Baptist/Holy Trinity Church.
